Honoring Parents: A Call from Jesus’ Heart

One of the clearest messages woven throughout Scripture is the call to honor and care for our parents. Jesus Himself reminded the Pharisees of God’s command: “Honor your father and mother” (Matthew 15:4). He wasn’t just pointing to a rule from long ago—He was affirming a timeless truth about love, family, and responsibility.

For many of us over 50, this message strikes deeply. We’ve seen our parents grow older, and in some cases, we’ve already walked the painful path of saying goodbye. We understand what it means to step into the role of caretaker—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. And yet, Jesus invites us to go even further: not only to meet their needs but also to lift them up in prayer.

Prayer for our parents is a gift that never fades. Whether they are still living or have already passed, our prayers carry gratitude, love, and faith. We can thank God for their sacrifices, ask Him to grant them peace and health, and trust His mercy over their lives. Even when relationships were strained, prayer becomes a bridge that heals wounds and softens hearts.

In a culture that often glorifies independence, Jesus reminds us of something different: family is sacred. Caring for our parents isn’t a burden—it’s a blessing. It reflects God’s own love for us, a love that never leaves, never tires, and never forgets.

So today, take a moment to pause. Call your mom or dad if you can. Visit their resting place if they’re gone. Most of all, bow your head and pray. Because honoring our parents doesn’t end with time—it lives on in the legacy of love we carry forward.
